The house at SCAREDOWN, known as “DEVIL HOUSE”, was built in 1836, making it one of the oldest standing houses in Warren County, Ohio. Legend has it that in the late 1800's, “Mama” and “Cletus”, with the help of several of their farmhands, brutally murdered their three children and three of their friends, in cold blood. Their 6 year old daughter, Elizabeth, is said to have been the only child murdered in the house. The other children were supposedly camping in the back yard, when Cletus and the farmhands began to terrorize them. Most of them are said to have ran into a nearby corn field, where they were eventually chased down and killed. Some people say that the murders were a random act of violence. Others believe that the farmhands were the driving force, holding Mama and Cletus against their will to assist in the murders. But we find the most evidence in the theory that Mama and Cletus were possessed by the Devil, and brainwashed their helpers to assist in the ritual-like massacre. Along with the six children, the bodies of “Mama” and two of the farmhands were found mutilated in the basement of the house. No records of anyone else's whereabouts are known to this day.
